The Kindergarten Class of Mrs. Maureen Pierret has introduced a new element to the reading program during their Learning Centers. Two reading “ambassadors” have been visiting the classroom to listen to our new readers. The ambassadors are two golden retrievers named Hudson and Ted. The dogs visit the classroom once a week and listen to the kindergartners hone their reading skills. They also enjoy a lot of hugs. The children look forward to reading to the dogs each week.
There has been a great deal of research completed about the significant benefits to children when animals are allowed to visit classrooms. Children who read to dogs in a classroom, gain confidence in their reading skills. Dogs are good listeners who refrain from making judgements when children are reading to them. Dogs in a classroom provide a positive mood, reduce stress and allow children to focus on learning.
